Thank you Lanette! Talking about this at home is an ongoing project that happens in short bursts. Right now what we are doing is working on little research projects about various substances. Everyone in our family learned about a different substance and then made a mini presentation for the other members. We talked about the most common substances - alcohol nicotine and cannabis. Next we’re going to talk about less common chemicals, counterfeit prescription pills like Adderall, MDMA, LSD. It feels annoying to him I think, like pointless homework 😩 because he hasn’t been presented with these substances so why does he need to learn about them. The strategy is to talk about it succinctly and frequently, for a stated amount of like 15 minutes max after dinner. Also one thing I have to work hard on is to avoid *only* talking about the risk of 💀 death from fentanyl. That seems so remote to him and comes across as overly 😬 anxious momming. The conversation is more about the street names for these substances, their forms and appearances, why people are attracted to them, and briefly overviewing the risks.
This is fantastic! Brava, Daphne! Have you gone through it with your own child(ren)? I'd love to hear how that felt.
